Sleep

Soft cloth sculpture with watercolour, beads, aluminium, metal, buttons, and stitches.

45 x 45 x 15 cm

This piece is part of a larger school project exploring the theme of overthinking. This one  specifically examines the sleep disturbances and emotional strain that overthinking can create.

Therefore, the motif of the pillow is used to explore the softness and vulnerability of dreaming, enhanced through the fluidity of watercolours. The symbols on the pillow are inspired by a technique associated with Joan Miró, in which one closes one’s eyes and allows subconscious pressure and movement to generate imagery. The pillow itself is “ruined”, torn, hardened by stitches, and reinforced with aluminium, to express the struggle of falling asleep peacefully.
